Why Blood Tests Matter for Mind Wellness

Understanding your mental and emotional wellbeing isn’t just about thoughts and feelings, it’s also about what’s happening in your body. Certain physical factors can significantly impact mood, cognition, and overall mental health. Blood tests can help identify:

  • Nutritional deficiencies – Low levels of vitamins like B12, D, or iron can contribute to fatigue, low mood, or difficulty concentrating.

  • Hormonal imbalances – Thyroid, cortisol, or sex hormone levels can affect anxiety, depression, and energy.

  • Inflammation or chronic conditions – High inflammation, blood sugar irregularities, or other underlying conditions can influence mental state.

  • Medication monitoring – Ensures any prescribed medications are at optimal levels and not affecting mental function.

By combining psychological strategies with an understanding of your body’s health, you can support mind wellness more effectively and holistically. Blood tests provide crucial insight that helps tailor lifestyle changes, nutrition, and interventions to support emotional and cognitive wellbeing.

Understanding the science of our bodies alongside our psychological presentation allows us to create effective and timely interventions.

Why consider a blood test?

If you are experiencing fatigue, poor memory, or brain fog, there could be many underlying causes. A simple home blood test that is performed well, can help identify potential contributing factors. General health blood test such as Thriva or Medichecks, send your results within three days. Their GP will analyse and highlight any notable areas and provide recommendations for action.

If you came for therapy and reported poor memory and word finding difficulties, there are many explanations. This is where I may recommend a home blood test.

For example, if your blood tests results indicate a low Vitamin D level, an issue linked to poor memory, the GP may suggest simple lifestyle changes and a Vitamin D supplement. Often, these adjustments are enough to restore balance, and clients report feeling significantly better within a short period.

This is just one example of how blood work can support your health and well-being. If, after addressing any medical concerns, symptoms persist, we can develop a therapy plan that considers environmental and psychological factors.

My Approach: The Holistic & Biopsychosocial Model

I work using the Biopsychosocial Model, which explores the interconnectedness of biological, psychological, and social/environmental factors. By utilising well-executed blood work, we can examine a key aspect of biological health.

Meanwhile, I can help you work through psychological challenges while addressing social and environmental influences.

As with all aspects of therapy, blood work is a suggestion. the decision is entirely yours.

Are Thriva & Medichecks Blood Tests Accurate?

Yes, both Thriva and Medichecks labs are fully accredited by UKAS (ISO15189 or ISO17025), ensuring regular quality and safety checks. All blood test results are reviewed and reported by NHS-practicing GPs. However, no test is 100% perfect, and certain factors can impact reliability.

For the most accurate results:

Take your home blood test first thing in the morning.

Avoid exercise before your test.

Ensure you send the sample back on the same day.

By integrating scientific insight with therapeutic support, we can create a tailored approach to improving your overall health and well-being.
